abstract = {This chapter critically reviews the role of amicus submissions in investment arbitration, with a focus on cases arising in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We review the changing role of the amicus process in the investment regime and trace its underlying objectives and justifications. We claim that in the context of the COVID pandemic, an extra dose of caution is required when weighing up the usual justifications for liberalising and encouraging the participation of amici curiae. In particular, the assumption that amicus participation serves to promote the legitimacy of arbitration is undermined when politically motivated amici seek to dress up their interventions as neutral scientific expertise. This cautionary tale resonates beyond the COVID context: in a post-truth era in which scientific evidence and expertise are constantly manipulated in the service of political agendas, tribunals will do well to approach the amicus process with increasing care.},

abstract = {The “School, Territory and Post-Conflict” project was developed in southern Tolima with the aim of contributing to the construction of a culture of peace. It included the participation of the universities of East Anglia and Ibagué, as well as Eureka Educativa; teachers from rural and urban educational institutions (educational line), as well as leaders of youth, women and coffee-growing organizations (community line) were involved as co-researchers. From the first contacts, the community line reconfigured the research question, and went from investigating how the armed conflict had impacted the territory, toinvestigating the ways in which local practices had built peace, even during the conflict. This shift in focus not only had epistemological consequences, shifting from the analysis of peace from war (the traditional approach in the country) to the analysis of peace from peace itself, but it had three key political and ethical implications: (1) it raised the importance of constructing an alternative narrative about the country, (2) it questioned the power relations prevailing in these territories, and (3) it rethought the place of researchers. In this way, it promoted another way of developing the relationship between communities and work teams linked to universities. The chapter addresses this relationship, investigating the knowledge-power relationship in the construction of peace. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of promoting undisciplined research, which seeks to overcome questions and orientations validated from standardized knowledge, as a central element for greater community participation.},

Much debate persists, however, as to whether existing legal frameworks can provide effective protection to those affected, especially those who are forced to cross borders to escape the danger. These arguments are closely linked to ones surrounding the terminology used to describe the phenomenon. This chapter contextualises these debates within a selection of key recent legal and policy developments, and attempts to unpick some of these questions and suggest ways forward, based on critical engagement with certain underlying premises of refugee, human rights, and environmental law.},

This chapter provides an overview of how this field has evolved, from analysis of the links between racism and the location of toxic pollutants to a multi-issue and multi-scaled analysis of the ways in which social discrimination leads to patterns of injustice in which more powerful groups of people secure an unfair share of environmental resources whilst less powerful groups carry a disproportionate burden from the environmental impacts of this consumption. Such unequal distributional outcomes are linked to discrimination and asymmetries of power that exclude some groups from decision and fail to adequately recognise the worth of their worldviews, knowledge, values and interests.},

abstract = {Integrated basin governance means integrated water governance taking basin as the spatial unit. It deals with rules of integrated water resources management, including the establishment of governance bodies, the definition of interests and roles of stakeholders, the principles and regulations of decision-making, and the arrangement of decision-making procedures. For trans-national basins, international cooperation for integrated basin governance is necessary that is mainly embodied by basin cooperation mechanisms. The implementation of international basin cooperation depends on a number of mechanisms. There are about fifteen cooperative mechanisms in the Mekong Region divided into two groups: intra-regional mechanisms (cooperation among Mekong countries) and mechanisms between Mekong countries and non-basin partners. MRC, GMS and LMC are the three most active mechanism. Within the Lancang-Mekong River Basin, each country has particular perspectives about international basin cooperation. China is very active in Basin cooperation and has invested a lot of resource in this regard, but is sensitive to the intervention from countries outside the region. Cambodia and Laos, with most territory located within the Basin and essential or even majority of foreign investment from China, are active to diversify their international cooperation while maintaining close cooperation with China. Most of the inflow of foreign investments into Myanmar comes from Asian countries, followed by European countries and the United States, and is influenced by its domestic political situation. Thailand has been a relatively stable recipient country of foreign investment for a long time and has benefited significantly, it has now become a donor country, playing an important leading role in basin cooperation. Vietnam’s foreign investment mainly comes from Japan, Korea, and ASEAN. Vietnam plays the leading role in environmental cooperation in Lower Mekong Cooperation with the United States, and has actively participated in the “One Decade of Green Mekong” initiative in Mekong-Japan cooperation. Some countries outside the basin, such as the United States, Japan, India, Korea, India and international organizations such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, have significant influence on basin governance. Social participation in Lancang-Mekong River Basin governance plays a very important role. A variety of stakeholders, ranging from global network initiatives to local NGOs, from business enterprises to communities, have been actively engaging in the governance of the Lancang-Mekong River Basin. They have adopted different strategies (e.g., scientific research, capability building, policy advocacy, and citizen engagement) to exert influence on various issues such as climate change, biodiversity, hydropower development, and sustainable livelihood, revealing overlapping and interacting mechanisms of participation. The future trend of basin cooperation is more optimistic along with the consensus strengthening and capacity building, although there may be still some interferent brought by big power competition and interest disputations.},

abstract = {This chapter examines the effectiveness of the adoption of circular economy (CE) framework into geothermal power generation to boost life cycle environmental sustainability. With geothermal energy expected to grow by 251% by the year 2030, tapping into this consistent energy source is crucial for the 2050 net-zero target. Nevertheless, challenges such as limited natural hydrothermal reservoirs and high exploration costs persist. The chapter evaluates the ‘repurpose’ strategy of CE, focusing on converting abandoned oil and gas wells (AOGWs) for geothermal power generation. Three systems, repurposed two completely AOGWs (R-GEOdouble, a single completely AOGW (R-GEOsingle), and semi-AOGWs (R-GEOsemi), are analysed against a business-as-usual geothermal plant, GEObau. Results indicate that these systems can decrease their climate change potential by 15%, 23%, and 34% respectively. Compared to GEObau, R-GEOsemi emerges as the most promising, though its advantage over GEObau is slight due to limited electricity generation. The effectiveness of repurposed systems largely depends on the choice of AOGWs, especially those with high water content. While R-GEOdouble and R-GEOsingle offer climate change mitigation benefits, their overall environmental sustainability still necessitates systematic optimisation. This chapter illuminates the potential for transitioning the fossil fuel sector to renewable energy through the use of AOGWs.},

Cold weather extremes continue to occur but become less frequent. • Also under high emissions, the growing season starts earlier, lasts longer and is warmer; this is particularly beneficial for grass-land and viticulture, but the chance of summer drought and dry soils increases. The precise effects vary across different agricultural systems. • With respect to rainfall, high hourly and daily totals become more frequent, leading to a greater chance of flash flooding. River floods become more frequent in the north and west of the UK, but low river flows and droughts also become more frequent, and water quality in upland water sources declines. The actual size of the change in risk is uncertain, primarily due to uncertainty in exactly how rainfall will change. • There are large differences in change in risk across the UK. abstract = {Despite achieving a record 14.8 per cent of vote share at a federal election, the reception of Alliance 90/The Greens’ election result was one of considerable disappointment. Largely due to personal gaffes that questioned the integrity of the first-ever Green Chancellor Candidate Annalena Baerbock, the party yet again failed to translate opinion poll highs to the ballot box. In spite of this disappointing result, the Greens became kingmakers alongside the FDP in coalition negotiations and finally returned to government after 16 years in federal opposition. This chapter argues that the 2021 elections were indeed a success for the Greens in their aim to become the leading force of the left-centre. Firstly, this election campaign successfully implemented the Green rebrand designed by Baerbock and Robert Habeck. Secondly, the Greens used their position as kingmakers to create a progressive coalition, which had a distinctively Green flavour. Finally, if the party can learn from the avoidable mistakes of the 2021 election and Green ministers continue to deliver and be positively received by the public, the next election could see the Greens achieve their goal of becoming the leading force of the left-centre.},

abstract = {In this chapter it is argued that building a sustainability mindset amongst organisational members is a key mechanism to enable business models to transition to a transformative sustainable mode of operating in the world. The organisational sustainability literature calls for a mindset paradigm shift at organisational level yet says little about the learning processes that may underpin or enable such a mindset shift. A recursive model of learning is proposed that explains the building of a sustainability mindset and unpacks the behavioural competences. The emphasis on technological innovation has marginalised the individual and their agency in generating change around sustainable practice, yet the lack of competence or know-how is often identified as a key barrier to moving organisation-centric sustainability objectives forward. Building a sustainability mindset unpacks how systems thinking and collaborative behaviour manifest in situ and can enable sustainable transitions through practice, bridging individual and organisational level actions.},

abstract = {This chapter aims to provide the reader with an understanding of how simple interventions such as solar shading can help in achieving both emission target reductions and accelerated progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Solar shading is a practical option for making exposed homes in the UK more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Solar shading for this purpose can be recognized as both an adaptation and mitigation measure for the United Kingdom (UK) construction industry. The importance of a resilient and sustainable home remains at the forefront of climate change discourse. With an increased scarcity of new affordable housing and a low rate of renewal, housing is still in high demand. Future housing demand and climate change impacts converge as a locus of interest for multiple agencies, authorities, and researchers interested in sustainable development solutions. Taking urgent action to address climate change impacts relating to homes is essential to both mitigate the global effects of carbon emissions and reduce the risk of overheating in homes. The built environment and all involved in the sector have a role to play in addressing these issues and finding suitable solutions. Solar shading does have a part to play, as this chapter will illustrate.},
