This research strategy sets out the Tyndall Centre’s priorities and approach for the next five years, as we remain a thought-leading, internationally recognised source of high-quality research and impact during a time of global climate crisis.
For 25 years, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research has been at the forefront of understanding the impacts of climate change and societies’ transition to sustainable, low-carbon and resilient futures. This new research strategy sets out how we will focus our efforts and resources in the period 2025-30.

Why this strategy now?
Ten years since the 2015 UN Paris Agreement in 2025, the world finds itself in a somewhat different situation. Societies are experiencing greater human-caused climate change, and we are very unlikely to limit warming to meet the Paris Agreement goals. We urgently need deep, rapid and sustained emission reductions.
Our strategic goals
- Produce world-leading research across the climate and sustainability space
- Produce world-leading impact beyond academia by collaborating with policy makers, industry and civil society organisations
- Actively engage in stakeholder communication and engagement activities so we play a central role in relevant climate change policy debates
- Generate the funding needed for cutting-edge research, impact and engagement
- Encourage and support staff to create an inclusive culture of research and excellence
- Develop the next generation of climate researchers
Research themes
Our four research themes will continue to connect the activities of our partner institutes:
- Catalysing adaptation and resilience: Understanding current and future risk, and hence resilience to climate change
- Reaching zero emissions: How we can achieve a rapid and deep reduction in global emissions across sectors and supply chains, through a wide range of approaches
- Achieving health and wellbeing through climate action: How we experience climate impacts, and how adaptations and climate action can improve human health and wellbeing
- Accelerating social change: Focusing on the importance of people, organisations, lifestyles and consumption in addressing the climate crisis
