Decarbonising the UK: Energy in a Climate Conscious Future

Our 2005 report was seminal in providing a comprehensive roadmap for reducing the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions across all economic sectors.

“Decarbonising the UK” was the first report to fully integrate emissions from energy infrastructure, buildings, industry, and all modes of transport, including international aviation and shipping – sectors previously often excluded from carbon targets.

The scenarios combine the perspectives of energy analysts, engineers, economists and social and environmental scientists to provide a whole-system understanding of how the UK Government can achieve a ‘true’ 60 per cent carbon dioxide reduction target by 2050.

The report emphasises that to accommodate the anticipated growth in aviation within the UK’s climate commitments, other sectors need to achieve net zero emissions, highlighting the disproportionate impact of unchecked aviation expansion. It also demonstrates that significant decarbonisation could be achieved through improvements in energy efficiency and the implementation of low-carbon energy supplies.

By outlining detailed pathways and policy instruments, the report influenced subsequent climate policies and underscored the necessity of immediate, concerted action to transition to a low-carbon economy.
