Carlota Segura-Garcia

Senior Research Associate

Dr Carlota Segura-Garcia is a fire and environmental scientist specialising in pyrogeography – how fire occurs across the world shaped by climate, humans, vegetation and other factors. With a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Oxford and a background in physics and applied maths, Carlota’s work focuses on characterising fire regimes and investigating how these are evolving in relation with climate change, human activities and ignition patterns.

Carlota is currently a Senior Research Associate at UEA working for the project “What makes a megafire?”. The project addresses critical knowledge gaps regarding the characterisation of extreme fires, their causes and impacts, as well as predicting their occurrence.

In her research, Carlota works with geospatial data from a wide range of different sources using GIS, statistical analysis – with a keen interest on Bayesian statistics -, and mathematical models. She is also very interested in producing science that is open and reproducible, trying to incorporate practices and tools into her workflow to deliver accessible research.
