Atiya Rahman

PhD Researcher

Atiya Rahman is a PhD researcher at the School of Global Development, University of East Anglia (UEA). Her research explores the causes and consequences of intimate partner violence in the Global South, with a particular focus on the roles of climate change, women’s economic development, and changes in women’s economic preferences. In addition to her PhD research, she is examining the impact of weather shocks on fertility preferences in India and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Before beginning her PhD, Atiya started her research career as a Research Associate at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). Subsequently, she joined the Research and Evaluation Division (RED), BRAC, Bangladesh. Her last appointment was at the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD). During her career, Atiya has been involved with designing and implementing evaluation research projects on diverse development issues, including poverty, skill development and urban development. She has also led/co-led many projects on COVID-19, including hygiene behaviour during the pandemic and the impacts of COVID-19 on livelihoods, education, and enterprises.

Atiya holds an MSc in development economics from UEA. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on poverty, labour market issues, the impacts of COVID-19 and skills training. Her current research interests include intra-household dynamics, climate change, women’s empowerment, and preferences.
