Andy Yuille

Research Fellow

Dr Andy Yuille is a Research Fellow in the Climate Citizens research group at the Tyndall Centre. His research focuses on the politics of participation, exploring public and stakeholder engagement in the development and implementation of policy relating to climate and environmental issues. He is particularly interested in innovations in democracy that seek new ways of engaging publics in decision-making, and how different kinds of knowledge and experience can shape decision-making and social practices connected with environmental change.

He is currently working with two multi-institution, interdisciplinary research centres:

  • The Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC), leading work in its Futures theme examining the social mandate for substantial reductions in energy demand. He is leading a 2-year citizens’ panel combining public deliberation with computer modelling to create “citizen-lad scenarios” – possible futures shaped by people’s views and real data.

Prior to joining Manchester University in 2026, he undertook a range of research roles at Lancaster University from 2019, focused on the relationships between society and environment.  His book, Beyond Neighbourhood Planning: Knowledge, Care, Legitimacy was published in 2023. His interests build on 15 years’ experience of working with innovative governance structures and influencing public policy and decision-making. His academic approach is informed by Science and Technology Studies and public sociology.
