This is a 5-year research and research-into-use project awarded by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC) under the CARIAA programme (Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia). The project focuses primarily on issues of water and land stress in the semi-arid regions of Africa and Asia, and how changing climates could amplify risks. ASSAR examined the dynamics and drivers of people’s vulnerability (in terms of livelihoods and broader wellbeing), while exploring ways to promote the resilience of people, local organisations and governments. UEA was one of five lead institutions in the consortium, and managed the regional research programme in East Africa, working mainly with partners in Ethiopia and Kenya.
