Shanali Pethiyagoda

PhD Researcher

Shanali Pethiyagoda is an economist and PhD candidate at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Her current research combines a behavioural economics lens with experimental methods to investigate intrahousehold decision-making of coastal communities in Zanzibar. Before UEA, she worked for 5 years in economic research and policy analysis at the nexus of climate change, agri-food systems, and development. As a consultant for international organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), WorldFish, and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), her work has covered a range of country contexts, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, and the UK. She holds an MSc in Environmental Economics and Policy from the University College London (UCL), a BSc in Economics from the University of Bristol, and has postgraduate teaching experience at UCL. She is also a member of UEA’s Norwich Institute for Sustainable Development (NISD) and UCL’s Behavioural Economics for the Environment Team (BEET).
