This report summarises effective efforts and best practice for growing interdisciplinary research to address global challenges. The document begins with the main governance and organisational challenges with interdisciplinary research, then capacity building, approach to funding issues, and finally communication and engagement. Our method is a narrative review of academic and grey literature, supplemented by interviews with selected current and former centre Directors working in the climate and interdisciplinary policy relevant research space.

Rhosanna is Visiting Researcher within the Tyndall Centre. She is an interdisciplinary scientist with extensive experience of spatial analysis and modelling. She holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia. Her thesis modelled projected changes to water resources, biodiversity and agriculture in Kenya’s Tana River Basin with climate change and development plans.
Her research has included impact modelling, climate change adaptation, low carbon energy innovation, biodiversity and connectivity, and natural capital and ecosystem services. She is a contributing author to the IPCC’s sixth assessment report and Associate Editor for the Journal of Ecology Blog. Rhosanna has experience of policy-relevant science having previously worked on BEIS-funded research and consulted for Natural Resources Wales.
