Maoyuan Yin is a PhD candidate at the Tyndall Centre and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester. Under the supervision of Dr. Eduardo Martinez-Cesena and Dr. Jaise Kuriakose, Maoyuan’s research focuses on developing an investment planning framework for power networks, with potential applications to the broader energy sector. His work considers uncertainties arising from extreme weather events and decarbonisation pathways towards Net Zero, using Real Options Theory.
Before starting his PhD, Maoyuan graduated with first-class honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester. During his undergraduate studies, he gained hands-on experience in programming, engineering modelling, and computational problem-solving. His final-year project involved analysing the resilience of Manchester’s power network to load curtailments under all Future Energy Scenarios released by National Grid ESO, utilising network data provided by Electricity North West.
