UEA has some of the most innovative and highly regarded centres for research in the UK. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate to undertake research in collaboration with Prof. Robert Nicholls in order to study “Regional sea-level change and implications” which is funded through the EU Horizon 2020 PROTECT Project.
This Senior Research Associate role concerns the global implications of sea-level rise (SLR) in terms of risks and adaptation. The overarching scientific objective of PROTECT is to assess and project changes in the land-based cryosphere to produce robust global, regional and local projections of SLR on a range of timescales. This post is concerned with interpreting the implications of the SLR scenarios at global and regional scales in terms of risks, adaptation needs and other consequences across the full range of timescales – from 2020 to 2500.
The successful applicant will be involved in extending and applying the DIVA (Dynamic Interactive Vulnerability Analysis) model, including considering the implications of sea-level rise over multiple centuries (up to 2500). This will involve using existing methods and codes, as well as developing new methods and codes as appropriate and linking them to appropriate global datasets.
The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and will involve collaboration with the PROTECT partners, especially the Global Climate Forum in Berlin.
Essential requirements for this post include a PhD in a relevant topic (such as coastal science and/or engineering) or equivalent professional experience in the research area, along with previous experience of independent research. You should have excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in peer-viewed books, conferences and/or journals. Experience of coding and using models, as well as good GIS skills are essential. You also need to be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.
This full-time post is available on a fixed term basis from 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter for up to 23 months, must end 31 August 2024.
