Senior Research Associate (part-time, 0.4fte)

UEA has some of the most innovative and highly regarded centres for research in the UK. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate to undertake research in collaboration with Prof. Robert Nicholls in order to study “The Coastal Climate Core Service” which assesses present and future coastal flood risks around Europe including the effects of climate change and is funded through the EU Horizon 2020 CoCliCo Project. The CoClioCo consortium involves 18 partners across 8 countries.
The Senior Research Associate role at UEA mainly concerns assessing coastal flood hazards at broad scales, with CoCliCo following a Fast-Track and Full-Track approach. The Full-Track will include designing a flexible framework to analyse coastal erosion and coastal flood hazards across Europe’s coasts and applying this framework using the best datasets to produce a library of flood maps assuming a range of mean and extreme sea level hindcasts and projections. The analysis will also consider the effects of a range of potential adaptation scenarios. The results will be made available via an open access web-platform.
The successful applicant will be involved in designing and applying the methods for hazard assessment at the scale of Europe. In particular, they will assess and use the best digital elevation data around Europe, with LiDAR being the preferred source when available. They will also interact with the rest of the CoCliCO team and work to develop the Coastal Climate Services that the project envisions as a final legacy.
The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and will involve collaboration with the CoCliCo partners, especially the Environmental Hydraulics Institute “IHCantabria” based within the University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain.
Essential requirements for this post include a PhD in a relevant topic (such as coastal science and/or engineering) or equivalent professional experience in the research area, along with previous experience of independent research. You should have excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in peer-viewed books, conferences and/or journals. Experience with numerical inundation models to simulate flooding, as well as excellent GIS and database skills are essential. You also need to be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.
This part-time post (0.4fte) is available on a fixed term basis from 1 November 2022 for 12 months.
