The 2020s is the decade when everything must change if we’re to overcome the environmental challenges we all face.  At The University of Manchester, we want to be leading that change. From our world-leading research on numerous sustainability-related themes to teaching and learning with our 40,000 students, we want sustainability to be at the core of everything we do.

The University is committed to achieving zero carbon emissions by 2038, and critically, within our “carbon budget”.  We want to enhance the biodiversity of our extensive central Manchester campus and ensure our site is a source of wellbeing for the 50,000 staff and students who live and study here.  We want to reduce the volume of waste we produce, the water we use and embrace the circular economy.   And we want to share our successes and challenges with our communities, whether they’re local, national or international, learning from each other.

We have a rare opportunity for a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join our Environmental Sustainability team.  We’ve spent the last year creating a ground-breaking strategy on how to achieve our carbon targets and we’ve secured sector-leading levels of funding.  We’re now looking for someone who cares deeply about environmental matters and can use that passion to drive and monitor multi-million-pound projects which will cut thousands of tonnes from our direct and indirect carbon footprint.    We need someone who can gather, manage and present carbon, energy and financial data from multiple sources and use it to win support for the next project, and the next.   Our large and complex estate will continue to evolve and we need someone who understands the environmental challenges in construction and refurbishment and help us make the right choices from day one.  And we need expertise to help us cut our waste while growing the amount we re-use.

We’d love to hear from you if you can help us take our environmental ambitions to the next level through commitment, energy and skill.

In return you’ll be a key part of a small but influential team which thrives on collaboration and mutual support.  You’ll get the opportunity to work with leading academics on climate change, biodiversity and other critical issues.   You’ll work with colleagues across Professional Services, who ensure the University is run safely, efficiently and sustainably on behalf of our academic community.   We hope the role will provide you with a sense of purpose and belonging along with a competitive salary.   This is an opportunity to create change and make a real difference.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
