Climate Emergency and Net Zero CO2 Urgency

More than half of the UK’s Local Authorities have declared a climate emergency. UK Parliament has declared a climate emergency. The Welsh Government has declared a climate emergency. Scotland has a Net Zero target of 2045. What is a climate emergency and what does it mean to you

With speakers representing international and local, our Tyndall Centre public event discusses what Climate Emergency and Net Zero CO2 means, whether it will accelerate climate action innovation, and how citizens and organisations can support and deliver change.

Much of the evening will be spent in round table discussions. You are encouraged to bring and share your contexts, experiences, views and ideas. We will publish a brief report to help inform further thinking around these ideas and issues.

Topics could include:What are you doing differently now that you are in a state of climate emergency? Is Net Zero achievable? What is your most appropriate date for Net Zero? What needs to happen to get there? What does a fair transition to Net Zero look like? Are there other emergencies and do these complement or compete with climate action? Will Citizen’s Assemblies help? Could climate emergency declarations end up being little more than empty grandstanding?

Your speakers for the evening are:

Corinne Le Quéré CBE, Royal Society Research Professor, University of East Anglia, Member of the UK Committee on Climate Change, President of the French High Committee on Climate Change

Rupert Read, Reader in Philosophy, University of East Anglia, and Extinction Rebellion national spokesperson
