Abstract

Despite it being the most studied and arguably most profound of global environmental change problems, there is relatively little literature that explores climate change as a security issue. This paper explores the range of possible connections between climate change and security. It discusses the widely held assumption that climate change will trigger violent conflict, arguing that if they occur such conflicts are likely to be at the local rather than international scale, in weak states and in climate sensitive regions. The paper includes in its discussion issues to do with both mitigation and adaptation of climate change.
