Research Interests

Susan holds an undergraduate degree in International Business and Languages (Spanish and German) from Dublin City University (DCU). She joined PricewaterhouseCoopers Ireland in 2005 where she worked as a Consultant for the Global Immigration Services (GIS) team. In 2008 she moved to Galicia in Spain to commence work as a Teaching Assistant at the University of La Coruña and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in International Development and NGO Management at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, specialising in the integration of the environment in development cooperation policies. Funded by the department for Galician aid, Susan travelled to Retalhuleu in Guatemala where she provided technical assistance to the “Oxlajuj Tz’ikin” development programme, working with marginalised indigenous communities for a three month period. In addition to project monitoring and evaluation activities, she compiled a programme-wide report summarising observations and recommendations in relation to the effects of programme activities on the local environment.
Susan commenced her PhD in October 2012 and the focus of her research is on the social implications of market mechanisms to deal with climate change in indigenous communities of South America, clashes with indigenous notions of wellbeing and the role of indigenous historical knowledge in climate change mitigation. She is being supervised by Heike Schroeder and Sheila Aikman.

Susan is affiliated to the Tyndall Centre and is a member of the Development Studies Association.
