Research Interests

Jon’s academic interests are in energy and climate politics in developing countries, and the broad role of politics and political economy in framing responses to challenges of energy poverty and global climate change. Jon is a PhD student in the Department of Geography at King's College London. He also continues to work on disseminating the findings of the Governance of Clean Development Project at the University of East Anglia, where he worked as a Research Associate (2009-2012).

PhD Research at King's College London: Justice and the Political Economy of Clean Energy Transitions in Ghana:

Jon’s PhD research examines the political economic factors that enable or hinder transitions to low carbon energy systems, and assesses the implications for the spatial and social distribution of the benefits and burdens of new forms of clean energy and of fossil fuel resources. The project considers the power and influence of actors and institutions that govern a range of clean and conventional energy sources and services in Ghana, considering the potential for clean energy transitions to reduce or reproduce the levels of injustice and inequalities that characterise the current production, distribution and consumption of energy. The project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The Governance of Clean Development Project at UEA:

Working with Professor Peter Newell (Sussex), Jon worked on analysis of the governance and politics of the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and other attempts to promote clean energy in India, in South Africa and globally. Publication and dissemination activities of the project continue, with more information available at www.clean-development.com. The GCD project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
