My Thesis' Abstract

Terrestrial carbon sink enhancement options, such as afforestation and soil carbon sequestration, have attracted interest as a complement or alternative to greenhouse gas mitigation. These activities offer the opportunity to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and may therefore prove critical to efforts to avoid climate change impacts. My research will evaluate terrestrial carbon sequestration options using modern global carbon cycle models, primarily dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). I will consider the impacts that these activities may have on the Earth system and on society, and inform priorities for model development and assessment of geoengineering options.
